Terms of service
Last updated August 31, 2026
These terms cover selling a device to SellYourDevice. The short version: our online price is an estimate, the final price is set after we inspect the device, and you can always say no and get it back.
Quotes are estimates, not offers
The price shown on a device page is based entirely on the answers you give. It is an estimate of what we expect to pay, not a binding offer. The price becomes firm only after we have the device in hand and have inspected it, or after a local buyer has inspected it in person.
What you are promising us
By sending us a device, you confirm that:
- you own it, or you are authorized by the owner to sell it;
- it is not reported lost or stolen;
- it is not subject to an unpaid installment plan or carrier balance you did not tell us about;
- you have signed out of and removed any activation lock, such as Find My iPhone or a Google account lock;
- the condition you described is accurate to the best of your knowledge.
If the device is not what you described
If our inspection finds a difference that changes the value — undisclosed damage, a different storage size, an activation lock still in place — we will contact you with a revised price. You then have 5 business days to accept it or decline. If you decline, we send the device back to you at no cost.
If we do not hear from you within 10 business days, the revised price is treated as accepted and we pay it. We will not sit on your device indefinitely waiting for a reply. Before that happens we will contact you at least twice — by email and by text — using the details you gave us, and the 10 days run from the first of those messages, not the last. Your tracking page shows the revised price the whole time.
If you get in touch after we have paid and you are not happy with the price, tell us. We would rather sort it out than have you feel we took advantage of a missed email.
Activation locks
We cannot buy a device that still has an activation lock on it, because it cannot be resold or wiped. If one arrives locked, we will hold it, contact you, and give you a chance to remove the lock remotely. If it cannot be removed, we return the device.
Devices reported lost or stolen
We check every device identifier against industry databases. If a device comes back reported lost or stolen, we cannot return it to you or pay for it, and we are required to report it. This is why we ask for the IMEI or serial number up front.
Shipping
We provide a free prepaid label for the first device in an order. Additional devices in the same order ship at your own expense. Package your device well — see the shipping guide.
The device stays your property, and at your risk, until it reaches us and we have inspected it. If a package is lost or damaged in transit we cannot pay for a device we never received. We will give you the tracking number and anything else you need to claim against the carrier, and we will help you file it, but the claim is yours to make.
Two things follow from that, and both are worth doing:
- Get a receipt. Hand the package to someone at the counter and keep the drop-off receipt. A parcel left in an unattended drop box with no scan is very hard to claim for.
- Check the included cover. Our prepaid labels carry the carrier's standard protection, which is limited. If your device is worth more than that, add extra cover at the counter before you hand it over.
Damage caused by inadequate packaging is not covered.
Local meetups
Local meetups happen between you and a verified buyer at a public location. Payment is in cash at the meeting, after inspection. Both parties are free to walk away before money changes hands. Meet in a public place, ideally a police-station exchange zone where one is available.
Payment
We pay within one business day of receiving and inspecting your device, using the method you chose. How quickly the money reaches you after that depends on your bank or payment provider.
Data erasure
Every device we receive goes through erasure before resale or recycling — see data security. Back up and sign out of your device before sending it. Once erased, data cannot be recovered, and we are not responsible for data you did not back up.
Limits on our liability
Except where the law does not allow it, our total liability for any claim relating to a device is limited to the agreed purchase price of that device.
Disputes
These terms are governed by the laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Contact us first at support@sellyourdevice.net — nearly everything is resolved that way.
Changes
We may update these terms. The terms that apply to your sale are the ones posted when you accepted your offer.
Before you publish this
A working draft, not legal advice. Fill in every bracketed placeholder and have a lawyer review it. Pay particular attention to the return windows, the governing-state clause, and whether the states you operate in require specific disclosures or holding periods for second-hand electronics.
